Yeongwol Plant Introduces Automatic Heat-Related Illness Warning System

The Yeongwol Plant introduced an “Automatic Heat-Related Illness Warning System” to prevent heat-related illnesses among on-site workers and began operating the system on the 10th.
The system significantly reduces the inconvenience of requiring safety personnel to manually measure the perceived temperature at the worksite. Data collected from thermometers and hygrometers is processed in real time by a central system to calculate the perceived temperature. When the risk level is reached, an announcement is automatically broadcast recommending that workers take a break or stop work. This helps prevent workers from being exposed to heat-related illnesses without recognizing physical abnormalities during work.
The warning system consists of one electronic display board and four speakers. Their locations were selected based on workers’ main routes and work areas to maximize the effectiveness of the warnings. When the perceived temperature reaches 33°C or higher, an announcement about a heat wave advisory is broadcast along with guidance to take adequate breaks. When it rises to 35°C or higher, warning broadcasts and messages notifying workers to stop outdoor work are automatically issued. In addition, safety announcements are made at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., when work begins in earnest, to raise workers’ safety awareness.
The system is also planned to provide warning functions when a cold wave advisory is issued during the winter, serving as a management system to protect the health of on-site workers throughout all four seasons.
Meanwhile, Hanil Cement is working to prevent heat-related illnesses by providing spot coolers and large fans in work areas, as well as cooling scarves and cooling pads for workers. The company is also continuously improving working conditions during the hot summer months by establishing air-conditioned rest areas throughout the workplace and keeping ice makers and electrolyte supplements readily available inside.
