Hanil Cement and Hanil Hyundai Cement are
taking the lead in carbon reduction by cultivating forest land on their own
property—an industry first. On April 23, Hanil Cement received official
approval for its forest management plan from Danyang County. The plan involves
preserving and managing 252 hectares of forest land owned by Hanil Cement and
Hanil Hyundai Cement in Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, without development for
the next 10 years. The area is equivalent to approximately 350 soccer fields.
The approval was granted after a thorough three-month field inspection
conducted by Danyang County and the Danyang County Forestry Cooperative,
beginning in December last year.
The companies aim not only to manage the
forest responsibly but also to obtain Forest Carbon Sink Certification. A
carbon sink refers to ecosystems like forests and oceans that absorb carbon
dioxide from the atmosphere, helping to achieve carbon neutrality. Upon
acquiring the certification, granted by the Korea Forest Service, the land will
be protected from development for 30 years, and its carbon absorption function
will be preserved.
According to the National Institute of
Forest Science, a 30-year-old pine forest can absorb approximately 10.8 tons of
CO₂ per hectare annually. For the 252 hectares of forest land owned by Hanil,
this translates to about 2,700 tons of CO₂ absorption—equivalent to the annual
emissions of roughly 1,100 vehicles.
Meanwhile, Hanil Cement is continuing its
efforts toward carbon neutrality through facility investment and technology
development. To reduce fossil fuel use in the cement production process, the
company is investing KRW 517.9 billion in eco-friendly facilities by 2026. In
August last year, Hanil also became the first in Korea to successfully
test-pour CO₂-injected flooring mortar, accelerating the commercialization of
CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage) technologies.
