The Udeok Foundation held the conferment ceremony for “U (友) Scholarship,” which aids needy students from multicultural or multi-children families, on May 7. The foundation subdivided its scholarship system into “U (友, meaning “friend”) Scholarship” and “Deok (德, meaning “virtue”) Scholarship” last March to expand its support target.
U Scholarship is the type that helps students in tough family situations continue with their studies. It targets high school and university students from families of righteous persons (soldiers, police officers, and firefighters who died in the line of duty), multi-children families, multicultural families, families where grandparents raise children, families with disabled persons, and families with basic livelihood recipients.
A total of 1,280 people applied on the Udeok Foundation website during the application period in March; among them, 42 students including 4 high school students and 38 university students were selected for the scholarship. KRW 12 million worth of scholarship money will be given to each of these students per year, or up to KRW 504 million in all.
Meanwhile, “Deok Scholarship” is the type that selects academically outstanding students and supports them in growing as great talents. University and graduate school students are selected based on recommendations from schools.
“The foundation will fulfill its role to help students in difficult situations not lose hope but continue with their studies,” said Park Seung-gyu, president of the Udeok Foundation.
